Born in Alliance, Nebraska and raised in Grand Island, Petty Officer Brammer enlisted under the Navy’s delayed entry program in July of 1966 and reported for active duty on December 28, 1966. He completed basic training at the United States Naval Training Center (USNTC) at San Diego in March of 1967. During his tour of duty at NTC San Diego he was a member of the United States Navy’s “Bluejacket Choir.”
Following basic training, Petty Officer Brammer was assigned to Fighter Squadron 121 (VF-121) the “Pacemakers”, at Miramar Naval Air Station for training as a Plane Captain for the McDonald-Douglas F4-B Phantom. Upon completion of his training, Petty Officer Brammer was assigned to the Line Division of Fighter Squadron 213 (VF-213), the “Black Lions”. He also served in the “Power Plant” division as an Aviation Machinist Mate – Jet. While assigned to VF-213, Petty Officer Brammer made two combat tours (1967 - ’68 & 1968 - ’69) to Viet Nam (Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin), with Attack Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW 11) of Task Force 77 aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63). Petty Officer Brammer was also deployed to the Yellow Sea (off the coast of North Korea) in early 1968 as part of the expeditionary force following the capture of the USS Pueblo (AGER-2) by North Korean naval forces. Petty Officer Brammer was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Viet Nam Service Medal with one bronze star, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal with date bar, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Cold War Victory Medal (Commemorative), Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon and a Presidential Unit Citation. Petty Officer Brammer was also awarded a “Citation” for outstanding performance during combat action from 28, January to 17 August 1969 by Admiral William F. Bringle (the first Commanding Officer of U.S.S. Kitty Hawk) and, was recognized as the VF-213 Plane Captain of the Month for February 1969. Petty Officer Brammer separated from active duty in September of 1970 at the 32nd Street Naval Station in San Diego. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Naval Service in July of 1972. |
