Born and raised in La Plata, Missouri, Sergeant Dull enlisted in the United States Army on June 4, 1942. He completed basic training at Camp Rucker, Alabama.
Following basic training, Sergeant Dull participated in 81st Infantry Division field maneuvers and amphibious training in Tennessee, Arizona, and California. Sergeant Dull was briefly assigned to Camp Beal, California in May and June of 1944 as the 81st Infantry prepared for combat assignment. Sergeant Dull sailed for the Asia Pacific campaign on July 2, 1944 aboard the USS Monterey. Arriving in Hawaii in mid July, the 81st Infantry Division underwent jungle training at Fort Hase, Ha. On August 12, 1944 the Division left Pearl Harbor, Hawaii aboard the USS Harris in route to the Pacific Theater. Sergeant Dull, while embarked in USS Harris, crossed the International Dateline sailing westward on August 17, 1944. Five days later the Harris made a southward crossing of the Equator. Sergeant Dull and the 81st Infantry Division excelled in combat action in Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands, Cape Esperance, Palau Islands, and Asor, Ulithi Atoll. In October of 1944 the 81st relieved the 7th Marine Regiment at Peleiu. While on Leyte Island, Philippines the Allies realized Victory over Japan and the 81st Infantry was immediately dispatched to Japan as a part of the Army of Occupation. Sergeant Dull, an Army marksman, was awarded the Army Combat Infantry Badge, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two stars, American Theater Campaign Medal with two overseas bars, Philippine Liberation Medal, Japan Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star Medal for heroic/meritorious achievement. Sergeant Dull was honorably discharged from military service in the Army of the United States on the 8th day of January, 1946 from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri |
